How busy are we???!!!!! Another school night event……….
We decided that we needed to brush up on the old Piste skills…………Stu and Sara fancied a bit of snow bashing so the four of us headed to Ski Dubai. Kath was in attendance but went to the Mall, shopping for an outfit for the Dubai Gold Cup event on Saturday.
Stu went for the snowboarding option and we all went for the skis…….
It didn’t take long to get into the swing of it again! Its great practice time………Stu was off whizzing down the black/red run, occasionally zipping past us taking the opportunity to flick up some white stuff in our direction! While we stuck to the blue run……
We met up briefly with Ruth, Bill and Jamie in between runs and darting for the ski lift.
I think I topped the table for the number of falls! One, not even near the slope……got off the lift and stood at the top chatting and fell hahahaha DOH! Then I was busy laughing at Stu who had more of a slide than a fall…..not watching what I was doing and over I went hahahah such a laugh!!!
Mid session interval meant a warm up in the Avalanche cafĂ© (Oh Dear) for a full on hot chocolate. Full on because it consisted of a really rich drink topped with cream, marshmallows and M&Ms………..with warm hands we returned to the slope to finish the session.
Right at the end we found Bill again…….he was all alone….apparently Jamie had a big wipe out and broke his wrist……..
Found out next day he had to have Surgery! Best wishes for speedy recovery Jamie…….

Thursday 22nd!!!! Our weekend has arrived!!! BOOOooooooooo its only a one day weekend! Oh well, made the most of it with another night on the town! We decided that we would go to Waxy O’Conners and then on to Rock Bottom…….a new venue for CJD and I! The Apartment Massive, (the group of us living in the same flats) all congregated at one flat and moved off en mass to meet some other colleagues already in the pub! The evening started gently….UNTIL we were informed of Ladies night!!! Thursday is ladies night where we could drink these slush puppy style drinks with various alcoholic additives……unfortunately these were not the only additive!!! A few E numbers were present for good measure, ensuring we all looked like muppets with Blue/Red/Yellow tongues! But they tasted ok!
After an hour or so the rhythm was getting to our feet and we had to move on to dance!!! Rock Bottom it was! CJD and I jumped in a cab with a couple of colleagues and left the rest to follow…..
Rock Bottom, is similar to Jimmy Dix…..live band, dance floor! BUT it had a kebab place and more space to stand and talk…..The dance floor can be compared to a box of maggots………it was so tightly packed, everyone doing their own thing no room to move….but the music was good….hence all the people! And they played ZOMBIE! CJD found us on the floor and we danced to what is going to be one of the iconic songs of our secondment!
Not long after, and at around 2:30 we just looked at each other and decided the big T had arrived………TIMEOUT! ………….= CAB and BED!

Friday was simply a BEACH day, nothing more nothing less! Al Mamzar the venue. Kath and Ian joined us later and we chilled until around 3:30….I had lined up the Safari for a group of them so kath left us at 2 to get ready…..
When we rolled up at the flats Jaffar was parked up waiting for them, so CJD and I had a quick chat before heading off to the supermarket………..Oh to quickly the weekend was over!

Tuesday 20th March was the Iranian New Year.
There are a couple of Iranian ladies in the office (Natasha and Sara) and we were invited to Natasha’s flat for food and drinks to mark the occasion. There were all sorts of dishes, the names unknown to me…and it was a nice opportunity to speak with colleagues….
As many of them trickled off home (remember this is a school night!) a few of us occupied our selves with plastic cups and ping pong balls!!! It was our own version of basket ball!!!
Natasha then educated us in what we were going to see at “the Iranian Nightclub”.
No one except Natasha and Jamie (her boyfriend) had ever been to a n Iranian nightclub before, but the description of the types of people likely to be in there, was intriguing.
“Javads”………………………………to many of us this would later translate into Barry Boy/Boy Racer/or as Dave calls them Chavs! Basically these guys don’t do their shirts right up, wear gold medallions like mill stones round their necks and drive cars with hand writing on the back saying, God loves me or, my mother loves me…….Oh Wow they are so cool! While spinning their car keys around their finger!!!
Anyway after this description we bundled into a car (we have now beaten the record….) ALL 7 of us!!! And set off for the club!
OMG we ended up in deepest darkest Deira! So busy even at 11 o clock at night! We didn’t really have a clue where the club was but after some dodgey directions we found it…..

As soon as we arrived…..we could spot the Javads! Hahahaha we grabbed a table and ordered some drinks…..WOW how much fun can you have with tonic water and UV light!!!! CJD demonstrated just how much!!!!!
Unfortunately just going straight out from work many of us had white shirts on, so we glowed like snap lights!
We were entertained by live singers……singing to tunes that were familiar but in Farsi….while CJD, Helena and Natasha shook their stuff on the dance floor!
We decided that at midnight we best make a move….and proceeded to hunt for the car park……eventually found the car and managed to direct Ed back to the apartments. The guys were tired and not really impressed with our navigational skills…..i think we will get taxis next time…..
HOW hard was the next day at work!!!! Sara, had gone to her family for new year and stayed up till 5am……..she must have felt worse than us!!! Tired tired tired…..

HAIR DISASTER AVERTED!
Right…… so the constant abuse of sun, sea, sand, wet, dry, straightening has taken a major toll on the old hair…..Before Christmas it was ok….we were able to wait the 8 to 10 weeks to get a mop chop in the UK, but, given that we had hair cuts at Christmas it was now approaching 13 and a half weeks without a cut! and another 6 weeks out here, it was now getting desperate….but with all the recommended places only open during the day we decided to try the beauty salon downstairs in the apartments. (……….well they were good at waxing).
Fully kitted hair salon no need to book, Straight in the chair…….

Not quite sure when the worry set in…I think it may have been when CJD asked whether she was going to cut it wet…….the lady looked at us, and said “you want a cut and blow dry right” YEAH…..she looked confused….you want it washing too????
Well now ………. how do you blow dry something that isn’t wet?????????
I found it really hard to sit in the chair next to CJD, every time we caught each others eye we started laughing!

She just had the ends trimmed off, but I wanted some length removing…and layers put back in….something that I worryingly found hard to communicate…I watched avidly as she started snipping….i was briefly panicked when I saw what looked to be kitchen scissors in her hands….phew, they were proper hair dressing scissors after all!

OMG they were rough! I have never had my hair combed so much during a hair session,. but it didn’t stop at that……It felt like I was losing my scalp and ears! Hahahahah
Everytime I shot a look in CJD direction her head was being contorted backwards as her rough lady looked for all the ends that needed trimming.
I went with the flow….i knew what the technique of layering looked like, and she seemed to have a good grip of that…..(all those years watching my mum…..i should have forced her to bring her scissors to cut my hair when she visited!). CJD was a little more concerned about my hair as she said…..”its looking short Sam’…………
Can’t be any shorter than the cut that I had near the end of Uni…..

Well, we had another option….did we want it drying….erm…..yeah!
With a brush or just rough……..Hmmmmmm, BRUSH….
GOD! One hour later, CJD in Curlers and me having my neck almost burnt off and a metal 360 brush used I finally left the salon……the cut was fine, but the drying style was the funniest thing I ever saw……
Trying not to pee myself I went to get chips for CJD and left her in the chair…….i don’t think they have much call for doing short styles……most ladies have long black hair and only have the ends trimmed! OMG got back to the flat and under instruction I was not allowed to play with it……Kath came to the flat and we had a laugh about it…Some 30mins later CDJ turned up…..i have never seen such big bouncy hair in my life……
All I needed was to get the GHDs on it and I was happy…..short (maybe a little shorter than I intended) scruffy manageable hair…like the first time I had it cut like this back home…..we decided in the morning that CJDs hair was Jennifer Anniston’s cut only 5 years out of date!!!
Still, 6 weeks left and we can go to our regular haunts!
Note the first photo, with attitude! WTF had we done…..it took a few attempts to take it as we couldn’t stop laughing…. Cant get over the back.....WHY oh WHY would you blow dry a parting at the back!!! hahahahahahahaha
And ALL SMILES in the morning, a wash and various GHD products just to get it on track!........

Saturday was still murky…..heads and weather!
Instead of wasting the day, four of us (inc Ian and Sara) jumped in the car, at around lunchtime……and headed for site seeing in Abu Dhabi! We didn’t get far before feeling the need for Dirty Food (a term that has been coined for any food that is fatty, greasy and generally not good for you, that makes a hangover feel 10 times better) I think we should campaign for it to be in the dictionary!…….a pit stop for maccy dees is such a meal!
The last time I went to Abu Dhabi with Steve I felt soooo ill, was full of cold and couldn’t appreciate it……this time no cold, but the overwhelming feeling of tiredness equally made appreciating it hard…..we found the Capital Park and had a play on the swings and see-saw……and had a nice wander…….but the OAP in us meant we required a nice cuppa char…….or, as matt says in game on………TEEEEEEEAAAAA!!!!
We headed for the Royal Meridian Abu Dhabi and went up to the rotating restaurant…..NOT A GOOD MOVE……the guy informed us it takes 1 hr to rotate the full 360degrees at its fastest setting…..and although it wasn’t overly fast….the slight feeling of spinning was a brave venture! It was a very pleasant break from walking and the tea was really nice…..at about 5pm, we just decided we needed to go home, so headed for the car and came back to Dubai!
In bed at 9pm SHOCKING!

What a booked up weekend we have planned for the 16th/17th March!!!!
Such freakish weather as well! 36 degrees on Thursday, it hasn’t been that heat since Oct/November last year…….but we have to say it was a pleasant surprise!
Although Thursday marks the start of the weekend it was decided that we would take it easy….feeling thoroughly drained from the 6 day week we vegged watching DVDs and consuming SOFT drinks and Pizza………while occasionally having the urge to kick one of the hundreds of balloons still sharing the flat with us. We were joined by another colleague Kathryn who has been in the flats for around a week….she came to Dubai around 5 weeks ago…so we have imparted some of our experiences to her….she is also keeping a Blog, and what pics you don’t see on here, I am sure she will post them on Daves Dubai Days! http://davesdubaidays.blogspot.com/

Friday was reserved for a well earned LONG LIE! Although as it quite typical, the old TRAINED body alarm clock woke us for around 7!!! Still it was nice not having to actually get up then!!!
The hot weather had caused the wind to whip up and what ensued was a massive Sand Storm! Not completely obscuring the sun but still looking murky we hit the Jumeirah Beach Park. Carolyn, Kath and I drove down to meet a friend of Kath’s friend….(so many people out here are met in this way!!!) such a great way of meeting totally new people. Alison is a nurse out here, and we were met by 2 more nurses, all relatively new to Dubai! So the 5 of us braved the 33 degree semi humid heat, sand blast exfoliation and salmon swimming up current experience that was the Sea!!! All in the name of rest and getting a tan!!! The main problem was the tanning oil!!!! It’s a must for protection but the only protection we were getting was the damn sand, STICKING to the oil, TOTALLY blocking the sun from getting to us! Hahahahaha was rather amusing walking to the sea looking like doughnuts that had been dipped in sugar!
As predicted the workforce massive came down around 3pm, to swim in their undies and that was the time to depart! Oh yeah, and another LILO has bitten the dust….we are now liloless! Say that after a few!
Back tracking slightly, we found out during the week that there are guys working here for the company, in different offices all living in the apartments….so like good hearted peeps we put our heads together and the NGS events coordinator (CJD) sent an email round telling them we would be on the roof at 7, coals burning if anyone fancied a BBQ. We decided that it was probably a good move to go up there at 6:30 to get the coals burning…….just incase it took a little more effort than I thought to get the BBQ started…..at previous events I had watched the guys lighting them with coals and lighting fliud…..it was taking them AGES! I have to say fella’s……a pack of lighting blocks, cover the flames with coals and jobs a gud’n! where is the issue…….gold star to Doull and Witts! We had that baby roaring in no time!
Kath joined us and we sat there in the wind and heat waiting………then everyone turned up!!! There were around 15 of us….no one was designated cook, it was a bring what you want, you cook it if your hungry……
Now CJD and I were trying to be sensible. We had booked the Balloon flight for Saturday, and if it was going ahead, we were to be picked up at 5am!!! At 8pm we had a call saying due to the storm and the wind, it was unlikely to happen but they were going to call again at 11pm after another forecast…..by that time an empty red wine bottle was standing next to CJD! The balloon was Cancelled! 
At midnight as the embers glowed, someone had a bright idea that going to the Majestic hotel was a good idea…..there was a band playing and the rest is fuzzy…….VERY FUZZY!......i think the quote of the night is from CJD “OMG I’ve broken her!” we will explain all on our return!!!

Right!!! 8th March 2007
This was the closest non school night to my Birthday, and as one of the guys was going back to the UK we decided to all go out for a meal!
One of the guys in the office suggest Lebanese and we booked in to what is reputed to be the best one around. Al Halab.
We raced back to the flat to get ready, got Nick and jumped into a Joe Baxi!
Stuck in mega traffic again!!! We were a bit late, but they didn’t seem to mind….We got a selection of delights from the menu and filled the table, there was around 10 of us…
After the meal we popped over the the Irish Village for a couple and then 4 of us headed for Jimmy Dix!!!!
WHAT A NIGHT! Again carnage, non stop dancing…..and jumping around, mainly to the proclaimers “I’m gonna be’ and because we looked like we were having fun, randoms were joining in!!!!!! again 3am came round far too fast!

Friday morning…..09:30 wake up call from CJD…not going to waste the day…..but whats this????.........NO HEAD ACHE!!! Still not right, but they may have been a function of the amount of water we drank! Bottles and bottle in Jimmy dix….didnt notice it was 600ml a time…oh well!
Down to Jumierah Beach Park to get some sleep. RIP Lilo.....we tried to pack two inflated lilos in the back of the taxi....OOOPPPssss....i left it in the boot....FLAT!
The sun is starting to get quite strong now…..so much so that I think even I am going to have to go up a few factors! Back to the 8 me thinks!
Totally tired we left the beach at about 4pm…..
Too tired do go out, we ordered take away!!!!!!!!
Bed at 10………………..well…………for me anyway!

[Sam] Personal Admin, Read…..a good book actually! The Lost Boy, it is the second book of three written by Dave Pelzer about his harsh childhood. I really recommend it!
Lights out Sleep.
BANG! OMG whats that! Someone upstairs must be throwing stuff down the shaft by my bathroom. BANG…..GDI! right going to shut the bathroom door! Muffled BANG HA not going to startle me any more……..Sleep!

[CJD & Nick] Quick, lets blow these 29000 balloons up without SLW hearing…..BANG, oops must have put too much air in that one, Pffffff Pfffffff Pffffff ‘your blowing them up to loudly Shhhhhh Quiet!’ BANG! Think the balloons have perished……..Pants!!! gotta bake the cake……rush to the shop…..BUSY BUSY BUSY

[SLW] ASLEEP

[CJD & Nick] didn’t finish till nearly midnight!

Saturday morning….work for my Birthday! Nice! Took about 45mins to get ready! Opened a couple of cards in my room…I guess I was taking too long ‘DO YOU WANT A CUPPA TEA???’ ‘Yeah, Just coming’, grabbed my bag went to my door, opened the door and……………………….had the biggest surprise in ages….it made me jump! The Noise, the colours….all these balloons were piled at my door, there was a banner at eye level that startled me saying happy birthday so I could read it…..i just stood there in total shock……speechless….They had gone to sooooo much effort…..it was FANTASTIC! Where had they got all the ballons from…then it came flooding back!!! The BANGS!!!! Hahahahaha couldn’t stop laughing and I shared my theory about the peeps upstairs!!!!
Hahahahaha
Came out of my room through the sea of balloons (even those big ones with the rice inside that you shake and bang with an elastic band round your wrist!!!) they thought of everything! Had a cuppa and opened my pressies and cards! CDs, Gucci Laundry and shoe bag from the Burj Al Arab!!! i wanted the from the first visit!!!(thanks CJD xx) and Scissor Sisters Tickets for July!!!! YEAH! As I missed the last concert! And these tickets are next to two of my mates! Anna and Mel! (Thanks Nick xx).
Then drove to work! Not before removing a few balloons to decorate my desk!!!
At lunch I bought some cakes….OK so LOTS OF CAKES to share with the sparsely populated office….it is quiet on a Saturday!
Was sooo tired after work that we went to Nandos for a Bday Bite and back to the Flat….and we couldn’t resist a Jimmy Dix memory jogger/waynes world style sing a long to the Proclaimers…the video from the dashboard IS ACE!…. for a laugh copy the link below!!!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQyGI7lWCIg

Nick had to finish packing and we had to take him to his drop off for the bus to Abu Dhabi….he flew Etihad!
Back at the flat, it seemed quiet and empty, but we vowed….our multi coloured friends (the balloons) will stay until they deflate!!!!!!!

TUESDAY 6th March
Tea time!!!!!! Opened the fridge! And there they were! All 5 of them! On their little plastic tray….we decided rather sensibly that it would be better to cook a spag bol, because the likely hood of making a gastronomic delight out of the chosen meat, was unlikely………HOWEVER! I did remove them from the packaging, cut one up (under supervision of a camera and video as evidence) and cook one…..we fried it in little chunks…….we fried it A LOT…..had to make sure that little sucker was cooked through!
CJD was going to bottle it but after some ribbing, snatched the fork, removed the plug from the sink and scoffed it successfully….she said it didn’t taste bad…..but it was once you thought about it then the stomach argued!!!!!
Then it was my turn….Nick chose the biggest chunk for me to try, my stupid fault for asking I guess! On the fork, just me and the enemy! CJD poured my water on standby!
In for a penny, I chewed it and it just fell apart in my mouth….really didn’t think about tasting it, but when I tried to I thought about what it was…..hand over mouth just to make sure it went the right way…..head back and it was gone….WATER!!!!! not bad but not overly pleasant….not sure I will do it again….then the focus was on Nick…..to our amazement he polished off the whole plate….while every so often mumbling MMmmmm nice….not sure if that was real or trying to convince himself. The video definitely allows you to spot a few moments where he realized at some point he was going to have to swallow!!!! Very good entertainment and MEGA pat on the back……
Sufficed to say, the other four went in the bin and we ate spag bol!!!!!!!

Saturday 3rd
Took mum and steve to the airport….had a coffee and then they went through 
Apparently it was really busy the other side! All emirates flights go through the same check in desks, so it is a bit busy to say the least!
I headed back to the flat where we waited for Nick………he had some trouble checking out of his hotel, and they couldn’t get hold of the company to sort it….1.5hours later and he arrived….gave us time to do apartment admin!
Really sensible of us, we went for a Dubai walk about…..in the hottest part of the day! We walked towards the creek, but before we got there we had a pit stop at Waxy O Connors for a cheeky beer and snack! On our ramble we stumbled across the Iranian Mosque. Beautiful ornate tiles decorating the front of this building! very spectacular, and a kind couple took a photo of us out the front!
The purpose of our walk was to get to the Dubai Museum. Everyone who has been has said how good it was! They were right. For 3DHS you are treated to a wealth of information and history of this place!
We walked through the textile souk...it was earie as it was all closed, and Jumped on an Abra.
We went to the spice souk and bought more honey chocolate, nougat, saffron and various types of nuts, and then on to the gold souk……..by this time a cuppa char was calling…..we had a quick walk around gold land and then CJD had a brain wave….lets go to the Hyatt Regency for afternoon tea!
But don’t think just because you can see a building, that it is close by! Eventually we got to the front door and took a seat. Because it was well needed, it was the best cup of tea I have ever tasted…..and in the pursuit of Ablutions, Nick found an ICE RINK!!!!! We must go and have a session in there.
After all that walking we got a taxi back to the flat!!!!!!!!!

Took Nick to Deira City Centre on Monday….needed Carrefour visit and also went to the cinema…..Carolyn took him to see the weird and wonderful cuts of meat on offer over here…….OMG mistake……
Finish wandering around head to the checkout….pay and leave…..all the time with reference to Lamb! Now I like lamb…..A lot…….but until we left the shop and I saw what cuts of lamb they had bought…………………I think I have been scarred for life….
In amongst our shopping they had purchased Lambs Testicles for tea on Tuesday!!!!! See photo evidence….
We went to the cinema and saw Severance…..a kind of Comedy Horror and it was actually really good. In fact the scariest part wasn’t the film….it was thinking about what we were having for tea on Tuesday!!!!!

Thursday 1st, I booked a day off and took Mum, Steve and Nick to the antiques market for souvenirs in the morning. It really was a hot day! The afternoon was left for our trip to the Burj Al Arab. Afternoon tea in the Sahn Eddar Lobby Lounge. I had booked just over a month previous and still couldn’t get AT in the Skyview Bar! We were not disappointed! That hotel still leaves me in awe every time we go there! A different selection of sandwiches and cakes from my last visit still very tasty….and that passion fruit jam!! lush!
After tea, we went up the elevator to the bar for viewing the palm etc and then to the souvenir shops. I was still eyeing up the linen laundry bag!!! And Nick treated himself to a Mont Blanc pen…..Very nice!
After wandering outside for photographs we got our car back from the Valet parking and left.
It was still quite early so we headed back to a bar near the Capitol Hotel. Stupid me didn’t see the signs for paid parking and got a ticket! DOH! But had a nice drink and a snack in the restaurant….it has a pool table and is walking distance from the apartment. So may get down there again! Took a drive back to the apartment and chilled before getting our heads down to go to the Camels on Friday!

MEANWHILE: CDJ went out straight from work for one of the architects leaving drinks…..no tea, just a liquid diet! A girl had just arrived from Birmingham and went out with her to Barasti (a bar). I hear it was CARNAGE! I saw how much like carnage it was early the next morning! CJD got in at around 3am……
Early morning wake up call (she did request it) and 6:30………….Time for the camel racing…..3hours sleep….hahahahaha safe to say she was still under influence!!! Good Girl!!!!!! BUT!!!! CJD pushed on through and came to the camels!!!! Singing all the way!
Well, the camels were only training! AGAIN! I am not getting up that early on a day off again……not to watch them just train…..they are dead cute though! But CJD was struggling with the pace….she fell asleep on the stands and we all got up and left her….there was no one at the grandstand and she just sat there alone until Nick got a photo hahahaaha she realized what we had done hahahaahha….went back to the flat for some fodder and CJD to get a couple of hours kip and we hit Al Mamzar beach. felt sorry for the guys in the back of the car they had thier own airbag!!!!
There was a breeze, but it was really warm!
It was mum and steves last day so we made it a relaxing sun worshipping day….took a lilo and Steve Nick and I went out for a mess around……..DOH must have been out a good hour or more…….and I forgot to cream my back!!!! The lads decided to try a new product……Factor Foxtrot! Short for Factor Foxtrot Alpha!!!!!! Developed by laboratoire Burnier!!!! (we did have fun making that up)………..we totally got burnt…should have seen the colour we turned! In fact, we have since discovered the problem with tanning/burning with henna tattoos…………you better check this steve…..
Because it dyes the skin the sun cant tan you, so you end up with an inverse tattoo! Hahahaha you should see nicks…..white scorpion! COOL!
Went back to the flat and got changed and did a bit of packing. Carolyn stayed in and got Pizza with Kathryn and the rest of us went out for a meal….Steve and mums last meal before going home. BUT when we got to Waxy’s it was like a club…..music far to loud to have a meal and a chat (how old do I sound!). DOH I didn’t know anywhere else to go so we wandered and stumbled across a Chinese restaurant in the imperial suites hotel that had an all you can eat and drink menu for 16 quid…..including alcohol!!!!!! BONUS! It was a really nice meal…and went back to the flat…..early morning airport run on Saturday!

Mega update while I take 5!
So, Nick flew out to the UAE with Etihad at the weekend, and had spent the week with mum and steve at the beach and wandering around. So we waited for his arrival and booked for the desert safari!!!

While we went off to Oman for the visa run, I threw more business in Jaffars direction. Three bods willing to go dune bashing. They had a fantastic time and he even let my mum go free…….bless him! He also bought them drinks! They had a thoroughly great time as has everyone who has been out with him!!!!
Mum tried on the traditional female attire of the middle eastern ladies…..will find a picure, and the lads went for Henna Tattoos………….BOTH THE SAME! Scorpions…
From this moment on, forever TEAM SCORPIO! Hahahahaha
None of them tried the shesha, or the camel, or the quads….but enjoyed the buffet and the belly dancer……
The place was empty…..most of the day the wind had been really high and we had had a sort of sandstorm…….we experienced it too, on the way to Oman….big red was really hazy on the way out. This resulted in many people canceling their safari trips, hence the camp was sparse of tourists……
We all met back at the flat later that evening and saw their photos and the DVD!
We didn’t get a DVD when we went on the safari! SOOOOOOoooooo jealous!
The rest of the evening was chilled, and chatty. We didn’t stay up too late as it was a school night, nick walked back to his hotel….a stones throw from the apartment.
